SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX LANDMARK CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

The historic Anderson Bridge, which takes the circuit across the Singapore River between Turns 12 and 13, will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year.

One of the world's oldest Grand Prix track features, the bridge's birthday is March 12th, the opening day of the 2010 FORMULA ONE season.

To commemorate Anderson Bridge crossing the centennial milestone, the steel arches of the 70-metre long structure will be illuminated with spectacular lighting effects during the race weekend of the 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX from 24 to 26 September.

The bridge is named after then Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir John Anderson, who formally opened the bridge on 12 March 1910. It was built to allow heavy transport including horse and ox carts to cross between the government administrative area on the northern bank and the commercial district (now Raffles Place) on the southern bank of the Singapore River. It remains an iconic link today, connecting the financial district to downtown Singapore.

Bridging the old and new

The Anderson Bridge, where Formula One cars reach speeds of about 200km/h, is one of a number of features around the Marina Bay Street Circuit that links Singapore's past history with its exciting modern skyline. Other heritage buildings include the former Supreme Court and City Hall, the Fullerton Hotel (formerly the Post Office building) as well as the Arts House.

While Singapore's heritage buildings form one aspect of the Grand Prix backdrop, this year's race will also see new additions to the skyline. Close to Turn 18 in the closing stages of the lap, an eye-catching vehicular and pedestrian bridge, the Double Helix, is in the final phase of construction.

The Double Helix's spectacular spirals of stainless steel links the upcoming integrated resort, Marina Bay Sands, to the trackside area near the Bay Grandstand. This new hotel and casino complex as well as the three additional subway stations which lead to the circuit park will open ahead of the race, making it more convenient for spectators to get to the circuit. While other destinations require expensive car rentals or lengthy coach journeys to reach the track, the 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX is literally on many doorsteps!
