Singapore, 18 September 2016 - Nico Rosberg celebrated his 200th Grand Prix in the best possible way by roaring into the World Championship lead with victory in the 2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX from pole position - his first win at the night race.
This was pure street theatre: in the brilliant Singapore spotlights Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull mounted a dramatic late-race pursuit that came within half a second of catching Rosberg, who held on to claim his eighth victory of the season and the 22nd of his F1 career.
The closing stages of the 61-lap race were among the most thrilling in its history as Rosberg's teammate and title rival Lewis Hamilton also saw the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen looming large in his mirrors. While Hamilton too held on for a podium place, his two-point lead was converted into an eight-point deficit with six races remaining in F1's longest-ever season.
It was an action-packed night with little time for speeches, and Rosberg obliged by keeping his first one short. 'It's been an awesome Singapore weekend, already yesterday with pole position,' he said on the podium. 'It was really tight but it was a cool ending.'
It was also a night of mixed messages, especially for the men in the Mercedes cockpits. Both Rosberg and Hamilton were warned about brake management early in the race; later, with Raikkonen's Ferrari edging away, Lewis was told 'We're going to switch to Plan B, just need to pull Raikkonen in.' It triggered 'hammer time' for Hamilton, who promptly set the fastest lap of the race to that point.
There was, too, an entertaining sub-plot supplied by Sebastian Vettel. The four-time Singapore winner started from the back of the field after a disastrous qualifying but launched a race-long comeback that saw him set a stunning new lap record of 1 minute 47.345 seconds on his way to fifth place behind teammate Raikkonen.
The action had begun in stunning fashion when Nico Hulkenberg's Force India was squeezed into the pit wall seconds after the red lights went out at race start. The German magnanimously refused to blame Carlos Sainz, whose Toro Rosso was involved. 'That's racing - the dynamics of the start,' he said. 'Carlos didn't go for any gap: he had to go round Max (Verstappen) who had a really poor start of his own.'
In motor racing the first man you have to beat is your teammate but that seems to apply to stablemates as well. Daniil Kvyat and Verstappen laid on some of the most gripping moments in mid-race when Verstappen, who moved from Toro Rosso to take Kvyat's seat at Red Bull, spent several laps locked in combat with the Russian. Verstappen had the last laugh by finishing sixth, with Kvyat ninth.
For Romain Grosjean it was a weekend, not of high drama but of low farce. The Haas driver endured the weekend from hell: crashes on Friday and Saturday, grid penalty for a replacement gearbox, persistent brake problems - and no sooner had he left pit lane to go to the grid than he was back in the garage. 'We lost the brake-by-wire,' he explained. 'We couldn't find the problem and the brake pedal was just going to the floor.' So Grosjean was out of the race before it even began. That makes it two DNF's, one DNS, two 13th and one seventh places in Singapore.
The 2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX attracted 73,000 spectators daily, with 219,000 spectators at the Marina Bay Street Circuit over the three-day race weekend. Against the backdrop of weaker local and global economic climate, the overall ticket take-up is 15% lower than the average attendance at the Circuit Park since the inaugural race.

Singapore, 18 September 2016 - Singapore was the spectacular stage but Europeans were the leading players as three days of hectic support race action concluded ahead of today's 2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX.
Whatever else happens in Florian Merckx's racing career, the Belgian has already looked after family matters. Asked what his ambition behind the wheel might be, Merckx said, 'Some day I want to tell my grandchildren I won a race in Singapore.' In fact he can tell them he's won two: on Sunday he added Race 2 of the Ferrari Challenge to his Saturday win to make it the perfect weekend on the Marina Bay streets.
Merckx, remarkably, had not won a race since the very first one in Japan in March, but his #1 laid on a master-class in Singapore, winning race 2 by the handsome margin of 17.2 seconds from Renaldi Hutasoit. Merckx also laid rubber, carving out the perfect 'doughnut' for all the Ferrari fans to celebrate his double success.
Singapore's Ringo Chong used all his vast experience to put pressure on youthful racer Alexander West in the second half of the 10-lap race - and it paid off when the teenaged Swede went into Turn 1 too hot, lost the rear of his 458 Challenge EVO and rearranged its aerodynamics against the barriers. Chong went on to finish a fine third (though he dropped his champagne in pit lane!), while compatriot Greg Teo was unable to repeat his Trofeo Pirelli AM win from Saturday when the car let him down early in Race 2 and he could finish no higher than 16th. Eric Cheung was the AM winner in sixth place, while Sky Chen took out the Coppa Shell honours in P12 overall.
Russian Mikhail Grachev in his WestCoast Racing Honda Civic won the second race - his fourth victory of 2016 - in the 'United Nations' category that is the TCR International Series. With some 18 nationalities and half a dozen marques represented, Grachev led Serbian Dusan Borkovic's SEAT Leon home ahead of Britain's James Nash in another SEAT in a race curtailed by the intervention of the Safety Car - not once, but twice.
It came out first after just three laps when the developing squabble between Attila Tassi and Sergey Afanaseyev ended as these things so often do - in tears, with Afanasyev's SEAT severely damaged in contact with the wall on the exit of Turn 9. In fact Turn 9 was the place to be for the action: the second trigger to the Safety Car was a clash between Tecpro boss Rafael Galiana's Honda Civic and the SEAT Leon of Pepe Oriola.
Earlier Loris Hezemans, whose SEAT Leon seemed to make more stops through the weekend than a Singapore bus, was the first driver to retire after another 'off' on only the second of the scheduled 10 laps. Saturday winner Jean-Karl Vernay was sixth in race two.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia drivers are Singapore regulars and they laid on their regular colourful show in Round 9 of their championship. Martin Ragginger of Team Porsche Holding resisted a mid-race challenge from PICC Team StarChase driver Nico Menzel to win by just over a second, with series leader Maxim Jousse third for Kamlung Racing after a breathless 12 laps. Jousse took pole on Saturday but was penalised for exceeding track limits on Saturday and started third.
An unusually disciplined race took a distinctly undisciplined turn on the final lap when Yuan Bo - penalised on Saturday for causing a collision - overcooked things at the notorious Turn 18, hit the wall hard and left Vitikorn Inthraphuvasak nowhere to go. The Thai est cola driver did superbly well to recover and hang on for Class B honours. Theirs was just one of several collisions on that chaotic final lap.
Local hero Yuey Tan pulled out all the stops after the big shunt at Turn 18 but his bid for top spot in Class B fell agonisingly short and he was classified ninth, four places behind fellow-Singaporean Andrew Tang. Tang lost time behind Zhang Da Sheng mid-race and could not close the gap to fourth-placed Mitchell Gilbert, the Australian-born Malaysian who races with the Union Jack on his car because that's his racing base!

Singapore, 17 September 2016 - Nico Rosberg, just two points behind Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, will start the 2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX from pole position - his first in the Lion City.
More food for thought, then: nine top talking-points from the Qualifying day for the ninth Singapore Grand Prix:
Rosberg has only ever been on the Singapore podium once but he has put down a marker for his first race win here with a stunning lap of 1:42.584. 'For sure one of my top three laps ever!' said an elated Rosberg after his 29th career pole position. 'I knew I really had to give it everything and really pull one out of the bag, and I did, which was really cool.'
In the end the German finished half a second ahead of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, who will start from the front row for the second year running. Dan the Man will hope that magician Dynamo, a guest in the Red Bull garage, will work enough magic to give him the race win he longs for on Sunday.
Rosberg's teammate Lewis Hamilton is third on the grid after a difficult day with two lock-ups at Turn Seven in FP3 and a ragged start to his final qualifying lap. 'It's not been my weekend so far,' Hamilton admitted. 'Nico did a great job and showed the true potential of the car.' Apart from his normal competitive fire, one other factor may drive Hamilton on Sunday. The Englishman is on the brink of the 50th Grand Prix victory of his career and would love to earn it by ending Rosberg's current two-race winning streak. Nico has seven wins in 2016, Lewis six and that two-point lead is looking increasingly fragile.
Strategy now rears its ugly head: Ricciardo set his best lap in Q2 on Pirelli's Supersoft (Red) tyre, Rosberg on the Purple Ultrasofts so they will start the race on those. Rosberg came with 4 Soft, two Supersoft and seven Ultrasoft sets; Ricciardo with two Softs, four Supersofts and seven Ultrasofts. Will that make a major difference in the race as they juggle their remaining sets? Not worried, said Rosberg - 'but I'll be keeping an eye on him!'
It seems extremely unlikely that Vettel can win a fifth Singapore GP. The first real Formula One shock of the weekend arrived when Vettel's Ferrari failed to make it through Q1. Early in the session Seb radioed in to report 'something broken' on the car. He pitted - and didn't come back out as the team struggled to detect the problem at the rear of the car. Vettel has been on pole three times here but will now start from the back tomorrow.
Next up: Romain Grosjean's miserable weekend got worse when the Frenchman lost control of his Haas VF-16 at Turn 10 in Q2, hitting the barriers hard. Earlier, while teammate Esteban Gutierrez performed very well to finish 13th in free practice, Grosjean was going ballistic in the cockpit. Halfway through, he radioed with another deleted expletive about his brakes; entering pit lane at the end of the session he went further, saying 'This is the worst car I've driven for a very, very long time.' That's how it feels when you are over one second and five spots behind your teammate...
With just three points between Williams and Force India the stewards had an important decision to make. Grosjean's Q2 accident triggered yellow flags, under which drivers are forbidden to overtake. Felipe Massa duly lifted off, and he and Williams teammate Valtteri Bottas finished out of Q3. 'I couldn't do my lap,' said the Brazilian, who was the first Singapore pole-sitter but is taking part here for the last time. 'Actually I had two yellow flags, at Turn 10 and Turn 16, while I was improving, but I slowed down. Maybe some other cars didn't...' One who perhaps didn't was Sergio Perez in the Force India, who appeared to overtake Massa - and Force India have both cars in the top 10.
The most eye-catching participant in the opening Formula One session of the day was, just for a change, the slowest on track: 10 minutes into the one-hour session a long lizard took a leisurely stroll across the circuit at Turn 3. He had a careful look before he crossed: as there was a Red Flag at the time it was all clear... One question arose as he slithered away: was he on slicks or wets?
The red flag culprit was Manor's Pascal Wehrlein, whose rear wing shed an end-plate after backing into the barriers. Wehrlein was clearly not in a charitable frame of mind. This is teammate Esteban Ocon's 20th birthday, but the German gave the young Frenchman no presents, just an extra workload that he had to shoulder on his own throughout the final free practice session. They finished it 21st and 22nd respectively.

Singapore, 17 September 2016 - Belgian Florian Merckx claimed the first race win in the Ferrari Challenge series at Singapore's Marina Bay Street Circuit on Friday with Jean-Karl Vernay of France the winner in Ferrari Challenge after an entertaining day's action from the supporting cast.
The first race action of the weekend came from the Ferrari Challenge - and it was superb, thanks largely to a mid-race clash that brought out the Safety Car. Florian Merckx had led comfortably - by 9 seconds - but had to defend brilliantly to hold off Rinaldi Hutasoit in a final two-lap sprint and claim his second race win of the season.
Singaporeans Ringo Chong and Greg Teo stole their own share of the spotlight. Veteran Chong, a race-winner on the Singapore streets in years gone by, strove manfully to make it on to the podium but just lost out to teenager Alexander West. Teo came through to finish fifth overall - but top dog in the Trofeo Pirelli AM class.
That's no way to treat a lady: Japan's Tomatsu Kondo may officially be a Gentleman Racer but it was his late-braking mistake at Turn 10 that brought out the Safety Car when he collected Kent Chen's 570hp V8 458 Challenge EVO, leaving the beautiful lines of both cars extensively modified in the process...
First to hit the headlines earlier on Friday had been TCR International Series pole-winner Jean-Karl Vernay. This is the ninth event in the TCR 2016 season - and the Frenchman driving a Golf Gti for Leopard Racing was the eighth man to claim pole position and five points with it. Not only that, but his time of 2:24.511 carved a staggering 1.9 seconds off last year's Singapore pole. With a reverse grid for Sunday's second TCR race, 10th-placed qualifier Kevin Gleason - the first TCR race-winner here last year - will start from the front in his West Coast Racing Honda Civic tomorrow.
TCR Race 1: race drivers usually do their utmost to shed weight, but TCR series leader James Nash gained 30 kilos between races in his Team Craft-Bamboo Lukoil SEAT Leon - the 'Balance of Performance' weight penalty after his win in Thailand last time out. While Jean-Karl Vernay won for the third time this year in a 1-2 finish with Leopard Racing Golf teammate Stefano Comini, Nash fought hard for his fifth place and now shares the overall lead on 215 points with reigning champion Comini. 'The race was just perfect,' said Vernay. 'I hope tomorrow's the same!'
Singapore first-timer Douglas Khoo from Malaysia and Dutch competitor Loris Hezemans, both in SEAT Leons, tried out the Tecpro barrier during the race and emerged unscathed. First-hand advice was close to hand: also in the race was Tecpro inventor, Frenchman Rafael Galiana, who finished 14th in his Honda Civic - without putting his product to the test.
In Porsche Carrera Cup action, the drivers' qualifying rhythm was disrupted when Class B leader Yuan Bo put his Absolute Racing entry into the wall on the way into Turn 9 and brought out the red flag; the session was stopped for seven minutes. Series leader Maxime Jousse grabbed pole for Kamlung Racing on the restart, his time of 2:17.913 beating Craig Baird's 2015 qualifying mark by just 0.086 of a second.
For their ninth race of the season Jousse is joined on the front row by series veteran Martin Ragginger of Team Porsche Holding, with teenage sensation Nico Menzel of PICC Team StarChase on the second row alongside Absolute Racing's Mitch Gilbert.
Singapore's two hopes Yuey Tan and Andrew Tang had mixed days: Class B champion Tan had a qualifying spin at Turn 5 in his Team Jebsen GT3 Cup car and qualified second in class B behind Yuan Bo - another crasher - while 21-year-old Tang of Porsche China Junior Team clouted the wall at Turn 18 but will still start from fifth on the grid.

14 September 2016, Singapore - Renault driver Jolyon Palmer’s comment about the unconventional challenge in store sets the scene perfectly for the ninth running of the FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX this coming weekend.
The state of play in the Drivers' World Championship could hardly be more exciting. All right, it's a two-horse race – but both horses are of high pedigree and only two points separate them as they come to Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Both wear the colours of Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton leads the way on 250 points from Nico Rosberg's 248, but it's the German who has wrested the momentum back as they approach the finishing straight. The ninth Singapore Grand Prix will be the 200th in the 31-year-old German's Formula One® career.
Once 43 points ahead, then suddenly 19 points down, Rosberg has won the last two races at spectacular Spa and mighty Monza to re-ignite the challenge for his first drivers' title.
Nico now has seven wins in 2016 to Lewis's six; Lewis has seven poles to Nico's six; Rosberg has five fastest laps, Hamilton three. It could hardly be any tighter than that.
Hamilton, however, can point to an outstanding record in the Lion City. The Englishman has been on pole here three times and won twice; Rosberg has so far done neither in Singapore.
Hamilton is also gunning for a landmark 50th career victory, with this season – seven races left – likely to see him edge ahead of Alain Prost's 51 to become the second most winning driver in Formula One® history after the great Michael Schumacher.
But as Jo Palmer's opening remark reminds us, Singapore is unconventional in so many ways: a night race, with light levels varying through the weekend from day to artificial light in race conditions... high levels of heat and humidity to sap drivers' energy in the cockpit... grip levels that change dramatically as the weekend wears on... and, not least of all, 23 corners to be negotiated no fewer than 61 times.
Remember how the Silver Arrows missed both their targets here last year? Both cars started from row three; Hamilton failed to finish and Rosberg could do no better than fourth. Unconventional indeed...
We didn't have the greatest weekend there last year, so hopefully we're on top of that now. I guess we'll find out in a few days' time!' says Hamilton. 'Either way, it's not going to be an easy breezy drive. Even when we won there back in 2014, it wasn't straightforward. Ferrari and Red Bull will be on it I'm sure, so we've got a big fight on our hands if we are up at the front. I love a battle, so I'm excited to see how it plays out.'
'Of course, it won't be easy,' Rosberg admits. 'This is a Red Bull track and we weren't so strong there last year. But I have faith in the team and my belief in myself is as high as ever. I approach each weekend aiming to win the race. The points gap has gone up and down but I've taken it one race at a time - and that's the best way for me, as you can see by how the gap is now.'
While the Mercedes men have the biggest prize in sight, behind them there's still plenty to play for. Who will end up Best of the Rest, for starters? Right now it's Australia's Dan Ricciardo who lies third, but his 161 points put the Red Bull Renault man only 18 ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel. Singapore could help them both.
Seb has local history on his side: he is one of the three drivers to have won in Singapore, and he has done so no fewer than four times, including last year. Danny Ric, meanwhile, is on a Singapore roll: he qualified third and finished third two years ago, qualified second and finished second last year... you see where that one's going.
We also need to factor in a new variable for 2016: tyres. Yes, they have always had them – but they have never had so many to choose from. This year Pirelli has five 'slick' compounds and will bring three of them to Marina Bay: Soft (Yellow), Supersoft (Red) and Ultrasoft (Purple).
The choice offers a wider range of possible strategies. As TV analyst Martin Brundle said at Monza last time out, 'Three compounds has worked a treat. It adds that little bit of unpredictability towards the end of a race.'
We know in advance, too, that Hamilton and Rosberg are playing it slightly different here: of the 13 sets to be nominated by each driver, Lewis has opted for 3 Soft, 3 Supersoft and 7 Ultrasoft, while Nico prefers a 4/2/7 split. Several drivers have gone down a different path with a 1/3/9 combination.
Last but not least, the unforgiving nature of Marina Bay, and those 23 corners, mean that it's a circuit where the man in the cockpit comes into play, as Force India's Sergio Pérez points out: 'The key to being quick in Singapore is precision. You need to find every last millimetre of the track, almost kiss the walls and have a stable rear end of the car. It's a circuit that can catch you out and I can't remember a race there without a Safety Car, so races can be shaken up at any time. It's also a track that rewards guts and where the driver can make a big difference.'
In the constructors' stakes Mercedes are out of sight with a massive 498 points, but Red Bull on 290 lead Ferrari by 11. Ricciardo and Vettel will want maximum back-up from teammates Max Verstappen and Kimi Raïkkönen respectively.
Further back, Williams – deeply disappointed not to be challenging higher up – are fighting desperately to retain fourth place ahead of Force India. Just three points separate the two teams as they arrive in Singapore.
Last but not least, several Formula One® players will be trying to secure their own place in the Singapore spotlight as Formula 1 goes through a changing of the guard, both on track and off it.
The prize seat up for grabs in 2017 is surely at Williams, where the much-loved Felipe Massa will bid farewell to Formula One® at the end of the season.
So, as the sport's first night race prepares for its ninth edition – already! – there is still a great deal to play for in this, the longest season in Formula One® history.
What surprises does Singapore have in store this time?

14 September 2016, Singapore - Reports of touting before this weekend’s 2016 FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX have prompted race promoter Singapore GP to protect bona fide race patrons by setting tickets aside in a number of categories for sale on-site only.
Reselling is forbidden in order to discourage the touting or hoarding of tickets. This is meant to protect the interest of genuine fans.
Buyers breach the Conditions of Sale and Entry if they resell tickets or purchase tickets from an unauthorised agent. Such tickets could be voided and the ticket holder may be refused entry to the race. Last year Singapore GP acted against unauthorised resellers, and will not hesitate to do so again.
In order to prevent this happening again, Singapore GP has therefore set aside a number of tickets within the current allocation for purchase at the official outlets listed below only.
Tickets can be obtained at selected gates at the Circuit Park from 16 to 18 September as well as the Ticket Collection Centre at the Raffles City Convention Centre (Swissotel The Stamford, Level 4) from 10am to 10pm daily until 18 September.
As remaining tickets are selling fast, patrons who have not yet made their purchase are encouraged to act quickly. Information on available ticket categories is available online at www.singaporegp.sg and via the ticketing hotline at +65-6738 6738.
