The Russian rising star

Daniil Kvyat grabbed the opportunity of a seat in Formula One with both hands when Toro Rosso handed him a drive in 2014. Driving a midfield car, the Russian made a number of appearances in Q3 and scored points in five races that year.

It was that kind of form and the 20-year-old’s mature approach to racing for such a young driver that caught the attention of Red Bull. And when Sebastian Vettel left the team for Ferrari at the end of that season, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner swiftly signed Kvyat alongside Daniel Ricciardo.

In his first year at the senior Red Bull team, Kvyat made a low-key start, but followed that up with sparkling performances in Monaco and Hungary, where he finished second to record his first Formula One podium. A series of late-season points finishes meant he beat Ricciardo to seventh in the standings.

The Russian, who comes from Ufa, Bashkortostan, made his single-seater racing debut in 2010. Competing in Formula BMW with Red Bull backing, the Russian raced in both the European series and scored his first two race wins in the Pacific series.

Kvyat raced in the New Zealand-based Toyota Racing Series, before heading to Europe for the 2011 Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the Northern European Cup, where he scored three victories at Monza. The 2012 season brought the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps title and Kvyat also finished a close second behind McLaren test driver Stoffel Vandoorne in the Eurocup series.

A year later, he raced in both the F3 Euro series and in GP3, where three victories powered him to the champions’ title and convinced his Red Bull backers to entrust him with a Toro Rosso drive. Although he started the 2016 season with Red Bull, he re-joined Toro Rosso after just four races.
