Marcus Ericsson’s future in Formula One was uncertain when Caterham went into administration towards the end of his debut season in 2014. But the Swede signed for Sauber, bringing with him a significant amount of sponsorship.
Ericsson made an impressive start to his racing career, swapping karts for single-seaters and clinching the Formula BMW UK crown at his first attempt in 2007. After a couple of seasons in British F3, he got the chance to test a BrawnGP F1 car in 2009 and a year later earned a drive in GP2, the feeder series to Formula One.
Four seasons in GP2, which yielded a win and a handful of podiums, followed before he secured his drive with Caterham for 2014. It was a difficult debut in Formula One, with the Caterham struggling for pace.
After signing for Sauber, Ericsson scored points in the first race of 2015 when his finished eighth at the Australian Grand Prix. Four more points finishes followed over the course of last season and although he did not score a top ten result in 2016 he delivered solid performances throughout.
