Coming into his prime
Daniel Ricciardo was one of the drivers of the season back in 2014, as the Australian was the only non-Mercedes driver to win a race all year. He repeated that feat on three occasions but Red Bull’s engine dramas meant he could did not win again in 2015, where he was beaten in the points by teammate Daniil Kvyat.
The Australian driver bounced back in 2016. At Monaco, he delivered a stunning lap to score his first F1 pole position and should have won the race but a Red Bull pit stop disaster meant he lost out. He did win in Malaysia, coming out on top in a fight with Verstappen just has Hamilton’s engine exploded.
The Australian always has a smile on his face and his happy-go-lucky persona with a penchant for music and tennis disguises a determined and clever racer. He has pulled of a string of impressive overtaking moves in the last three seasons, including a brilliant one at the Hungaroring in 2014 on Lewis Hamilton, who was in a superior car.
Ricciardo, from Perth in Western Australia, has impressed many with his honesty and reluctance to make excuses but will face a challenge to keep Verstappen at bay over the course of the season. Although Red Bull is expecting 2017 to be start off tough and then get better, anticipate the young Australian looking to seize every opportunity.
