Return to form at Force India

Sergio Perez is a feisty racer; the Mexican exploding onto the scene with some brilliant and aggressive drives for Sauber in his debut season in 2011.

It followed a single-seater apprenticeship that involved Formula BMW, Formula 3 and the GP2 series. His first drive in F1 was impressive, as he finished seventh before his car was disqualified on technical grounds. He was retained by Sauber for 2012 and endured highs of podiums in Malaysia - where he battled Fernando Alonso for the win - and Canada but struggled for consistency.

A third podium followed in Italy and he later signed for McLaren for the following year. Unfortunately, it was a difficult season as the Mexican struggled with an uncompetitive car. A fifth-place finish in India was the highlight and after being dropped by McLaren, he signed for Force India.

Perez performed strongly against his highly rated teammate Nico Hulkenberg in 2014 and beat him in the points standings in 2015. Perez also scored a fifth Formula One podium when he finished third at that year’s Russian Grand Prix and seems to be enjoying a career renaissance with Force India after his difficult single season with McLaren.

What is less well known about Perez is that he could easily have carved out a career as a professional footballer, about which he is equally passionate, and although the legal profession also tempted him, motor racing won out.
